‘School of Rock: The Musical’ Hits All the Right Notes

The SAC/SAS Dramatic Society received multiple standing ovations for their staging of School of Rock: The Musical, an upbeat, feel-good musical staged Nov. 13-16 in Wirth Theatre.

It featured a cast of talented musicians and singers in Grades 5 to 12 from St. Andrew’s College and St. Anne’s School, backed up by tech-savvy student crew members.

School of Rock tells the story of Dewey Finn, an impoverished, paunchy rocker dropped by his band for slovenly showboating, who impersonates his roommate to get a substitute-teaching job at a stuffy private school. He has no teaching experience and doesn’t impress the worldly-wise little kids one bit. The situation looks hopeless until he hears them playing stiff, serious classical music. He secretly transforms the kids into a rock band, aiming for a $20,000 contest prize. They don’t win, but Dewey redeems himself, transforms the kids’ regimented lives and brings them closer to their dysfunctional but loving parents – all with the power of rock ’n’ roll.

The music unleashed the inner rock stars among the parents, family members, and friends who attended the four sold-out performances. They witnessed the cast of 55 young performers bring this charming and vibrant 2003 film to our stage.

School of Rock is a true testament to the talent, passion, and dedication of our students,” says Kevin McHenry, Head of School.

“From auditions to opening night, their transformation into polished performers in just six weeks has been nothing short of extraordinary. This production not only showcases their incredible musical and vocal abilities but also highlights the collaborative spirit between St. Andrew’s and St. Anne’s students. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, their hard work and enthusiasm for the arts created a rock musical of epic proportions, captivating audiences from the opening scene to the final number. Bravo to all involved!”

With a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and our Director of Drama and Film, William Scoular, directing, this year’s fall play was a rocking success! Check out our photo gallery.
