SAC gets greener through 1,250 trees initiative

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, our commitment to plant 1,250 trees on campus in honour of our 125th birthday was realized.

The final tree was planted in the backyard of Head of School, Kevin McHenry, who was thrilled to add this sapling to his view.

Students from Grades 5 to 12 have planted trees over the years, as have students from St. Anne’s School. Our target was 1,250 trees to celebrate our 125th birthday. 

“This was a meaningful moment in our 125 celebrations,” Kevin stated. “It embodies our commitment to sustainability and stewardship.”

The initiative was launched four years ago by Outdoor Education Coordinator, Angus Murray.

Many of the trees were planted during Homecoming festivities as well as through the dedication of student volunteers who have been working to introduce native species to Willow Farm.

“We have worked closely with the Lake Simcoe Regional Conservation Authority (LSRCA) to choose the best native trees and bushes to plant. The LSRCA monitors and supports rehabilitation efforts along all bodies of water flowing into Lake Simcoe. They have supported us with trees and expertise over the last four years, at times even lending us shovels and staff,” Angus reported.

The pledge to plant an incredible 1,250 trees was certainly an ambitious goal.

“I didn’t set out to plant so many trees, but once we started, it just seemed the right thing to do for the animals, for the birds, for the school, and for the environment,” Angus said.

He said that as the number of trees planted grew, Justin Carter, Grounds Manager, and Matthew Jaekel, Environmental Committee Head, became key players in this community effort, and they were on hand to help plant the final tree, a white pine.

“This effort truly reflects the spirit of our community and our shared dedication to leaving a legacy for future generations,” Kevin said.
